Transforming my flat into a home

Transforming my flat into a home

When I completed on my mortgage (eeeeeek not sure if I’ve mentioned that on my Instagram? Jokes, I’ve mentioned it about three million times), I knew that I wanted to do some actual home improvements to my flat. LOL I have never done any DIY in my life and the only pictures I’ve put up in my flat were with command strips, so this whole home improvements shindig was a whole new ball game for me. I’ve been living in this flat since September 2014, bought it whilst I was living in it in November 2014, and when I did that, it was fully furnished, so everything down to the cutlery came with it. Here's what it looked like way back when I moved in.

Fast forward to February 2019 and I bought my sister out on the flat (we bought it together as an investment of our inheritance from our dad), and when I got my mortgage, I released some dollar to do some home improvements. Improvements like actually painting the feature wall rather than talking about painting the feature wall, and getting a sofa that doesn’t give me back ache.

Anyone else think I can’t be trusted to make decisions like this by myself? I’d agree with you. I have approximately zero vision when it comes to interiors and no amount of Pinterest boards are going to change that.

I decided to keep it simple (ish). I decided on the big changes first. I wanted to paint the feature wall which was a reddy-orange colour, I wanted to replace my two sofas with one sofa and two chairs, and I wanted a new rug.

Simple, right?

I’m the first to admit that my style is somewhat eclectic. From the gold triceratops plantpot (Gregory, he’s been alive since October and I’m as surprised as everyone else) to the framed print of the Fresh Prince of Belair Rap on my living room wall, it’s not like I’m going with a theme. But I like it that way. It’s not that I’m going out of my way to clash, but I like bold statements mixed with classic pieces and shapes. Which is why I chose a custom-made leather Chesterfield (after deciding that velvet wouldn’t be practical), clashed it with two mustard yellow wingbacks and chose a vintagestyle rug (from Argos). I tied it in with an emerald green paint on my feature wall, went for muted velvet scatter cushions (fromo B&Q but they're not online) and voila, we have an entirely transformed flat.

It’s very me. I love that there’s loads of textures, I love that I have my dream sofa and I love that it’s no longer a total mismatch of styles. Things like having matching scatter cushions and the colours of the furniture in the patterned rug ties it all in together a bit. I’m well aware that I’ve got a combination of furniture which will go the distance (the sofa) and things which won’t (I can’t see myself sitting in mustard yellow chairs from IKEA in 10 years, but y’know, it might happen), but I like it. It feels a bit more curated and a bit less like I bought whatever I could afford and lived with it then added to it.

It may not be the Pinterest dream, but I’m happy that my little home is coming together. And let’s face it, at the age of almost 27, having the opportunity (and funds) to furnish your own place without taking anyone else’s opinion into consideration is a rarity and I’m enjoying it.

And my next step? Making over my bathroom which is currently offensively pink and needs a more stylish update.

What do you think of my flat? Let me know in the comments!

The sofa is amazing and suits you perfectly and that wall colour is just fab.
Must feel so good to be able to add your personality into your space finally. Definitely a plus to not sharing! Trying to find middles ground sometimes is tough.. I've learnt to.. Just do it. Haha! Or add small things a little at a time. :)

  3. Those chairs! I don't care if they're not forever. I love the space you've created. I also love that you were able to buy an investment sofa. Part of me wonders if I'll ever graduate to that point - but then, the cats would trash it just as easily as they do with the IKEA ones.

You've inspired me to do more to make my house into a home :)
