Review: Red's True BBQ, Leeds

If you know Leeds, the chances are you’ll know Red’s True BBQ simply by it’s smell. The smell of BBQ seems to drift all the way into town, down Call Lane and round the Corn Exchange. Fun fact, I used to go to the gym underneath Red’s and come out craving ribs.

I was invited to review the new additions to the menu and I jumped at the chance as y’know, their food is incredible. I went with Kellie who I would 10/10 recommend as a plus one as she genuinely doesn’t mind letting food go lukewarm before tucking in. Absolute first world blogger problems right there.

I’ve already been quite a few times in the past and I can 100% guarantee that it will cure a hangover, take the edge off PMT and reduce the side effects of hanger. It’s that kind of food. And it’s also why I was so excited to see what dishes they’d been working on.

Red’s has made some pretty sweet additions to the menu as though it’s famed for its meat dishes, they’ve put some serious effort into their veggie and vegan options. The eating out landscape is changing as people are starting to cut down on their meat consumption as a whole, and instead of trying to fight towards remaining a meat-focused restaurant, Red’s has delivered the meat-free goods. I will happily admit to being a meat-eater and yet having tried the veggie and vegan options, I’d absolutely for-go meat for them.

Naturally, the guys at Red’s didn’t want us going hungry when we were trying to the new menu and brought us out an absolutely INSANE amount of food.

We tried four starters – honey bourbon pork belly, the hot or not baby back stack (we went for not as I can’t handle the heat), popcorn jackfruit and smoked mushrooms which were served on Texas toast. I already know that I love pork belly and that I love ribs, but what I didn’t know is that I freaking love jackfruit. It’s got an almost meaty texture and when it’s southern first and served with a Louisiana sauce, it is quite frankly, a taste sensation. The mushrooms were not what I expected either – they’re cooked in the bottom of the smoker and it means that’s full of a really intense flavour.

For the mains, we tried the Stacked Alabama Fish Sandwich and Memphis Pork Belly, which are new to the menu, and the classic Pitmaster Tray. Something which Red’s definitely don’t want to do it take the oldie but goldie choices off the menu so the Pitmaster Tray will always be there!

I’ll admit, I’m not big on fish, but the Stacked Alabama Fish Sandwich, was a bit like a Red’s Twist on a fishfinger sandwich. If you’re into that, you’d like it but it wasn’t quite for me. The Memphis Pork Belly was seriously meaty and flavoursome, but I think the bitesize porky belly we had for the starter was the favourite out of the two for me – I preferred the honey bourbon glaze of the starter to the Memphis dry rub that is used for the main. The Pitmaster Tray was an absolute dreamboat of a meal, with smoked brisket, babyback ribs, pulled pork, cheese and jalepeno sausage, mighty pit beans, pickled gherkins and red chillis. Oh my days, it was absolute food porn and I could eat the mighty pit beans all day, every day, forever. You’re talking death row meal level of goodness.

The sides we tried with the mains were the Charred Broccoli Carolina, Hog Fries and Grilled Baby Gem Hearts. The Hog Fries are as you’d expect, deliciously dirty fries topped with pulled pork and sour cream – dreamy af. But you know what? Charred Broccoli and Grilled Baby Gem Lettuce is what I was absolutely loving. They’re a lighter option to the sides, but fuck me, they were both delicious and blew my mind a little. I’m already a fan of broccoli but grilled lettuce was a gamechanger.

As you can probably imagine, after all of this food (plus a milkshake and a mocktail), pudding wasn’t going to happen and I left feeling like I was never going to have to eat again. Will I be back? Absolutely. Will I be having popcorn jackfruit, a pitmaster tray, charred broccoli and grilled baby gem lettuce? Absolutely.

Thank you to the team at Red’s for inviting Kellie and I down to review the new menu, we had the best night (and we got to meet Red himself which was pretty damn exciting).

Our meal was complimentary but my thoughts, opinions and enthusiasm for their new menu is entirely my own.
