Neon Cactus – Leeds

passionfruit cocktail

Some blogger events go down in history in my mind and this particular evening at Neon Cactus in Leeds does for all of the right reasons.

I’ve been to Neon Cactus a few times before and prior to this event, it was already a Call Lane favourite for me. It does the day to night transition really well as it’s very chilled for day time drinks and food but turns into a really decent bar of an eve. The weekend before this event, I was actually there twice within 24 hours (it’s fine, there were different staff each time), as I’d been for dinner and drinks after work, then back the following day for hangover food.

Neon is one of those really chilled places that you’d take your friends to when they come to visit. Though Leeds ticks off most of the bar chain boxes, there’s something a lot more special about going somewhere different, that’s independent and has consistently great service too. Neon Cactus is all about Mexican food, tequila, cocktails and every other drink you could imagine and as Mexican is my all time favourite cuisine, it’s definitely a go to. In fact, I’d go as far as saying that they do the best Mexican food in Leeds.

I headed down on a Wednesday evening with a group of bloggers to try out their new food and drinks menu, which I was really excited for as I already know how much I love their food. My absolute favourite thing on their menu is the Mexican feast which is £12 per person (minimum of 2 people) and you get ALL THE FOOD. You get nachos, tacos, quesadillas and fajitas, and you can choose which ones you want whether it’s meat or veggie etc. I’m actually getting so hungry thinking about it right now. I ended up having this feast when I was there with work on the Friday eve, with Sophie on the Saturday lunchtime and we sampled most of it at their blogger evening the following Wednesday. Three feasts in under a week. Living the actual dream.

At the event, we started the night with tequila (I can confirm that tequila on a Wednesday is NOT a good idea), and Neon Cactus do their own chaser which is lemony and a bit herby and takes away the post tequila burning sensation, making it all the more drinkable. Disclaimer, this is a dangerous shot to have, as you’ll just want more. We then tried a selection of the food including quesadillas which I could eat all day long, tacos, chicken wings and ribs. Something I did note is that there are a lot of veggie options on the menu, which makes a change from a lot of places. They do describe themselves as ‘street food’, though the portion sizes suggest otherwise to me – though I guess not everyone orders a feast every time they’re there...

When it comes to cocktails, I will be honest and say that I have absolutely no idea what I was drinking on the night. However, having been in a couple of times, it’s one of those places where the bar staff are really clued up and will either make a drink for you based on what you like or can easily recommend something.

As you may have already guessed, I’m a huge fan of Neon Cactus and I will absolutely be back there, but next time it will be a weekend as the hangover that the entire group had after that event was on another level. So tell me, are you a fan of Neon Cactus? Have you been? Would you like to go (and invite me along for tequila and delicious food)? Let me know in the comments!
